Central Government

Central Government

We have seen about State & Local Governments in earlier blogs, we will now see the last level of Government: Central Government.

High level Fundas
==================
Central government is fully responsible for some 97 subjects like defence, railways and so on, apart from this it shares its responsibility with state government on 66 subjects.

Browse through WikiPedia to find out about responsibilities of central and state govt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federalism_in_India#Union_list

What is your Parliamentary Constituency ?
=======================================
Just like you have "Assembly Constituency" for state government you have "Parliamentary Constituency" for central government.

Your goto person for Central Government
========================================
Your MP(Member of Parliament) is your goto person to represent you in Central Government, learn about him.

In day-day life most of your interactions will be with your Corporator(Local govt), or MLA(state govt), your MP's are usually based out of Delhi so its difficult to catch them!

Where do you belong! ?
===========================
At the risk of repeating time and again - I will summarize it below:

You belong to three places at the same time:
 Local Govt  : Ward : Represented by Councillors
 State Govt  : Assembly Constituency : Represented by MLA's
 Central Govt: Parliamentary Constituency : Represented by MP's

Understand all these fully, spend a few hours googling on each of them.

Wings of Central Government
========================================
Legislature in Central Government:
  Parliament is the legislature of central government, there are two houses in it:
    1. Loka sabha
    2. Rajya sabha

  You will be electing people to Lokasabha - Rajyasabha members are indirectly elected.

  The Political party that has the maximum number of MP's will rule the country! these people inturn select our "Prime Minister"

  The opposition MP's give a tough time to the ruling government, they act as watch dogs and take the government to task when they do something wrong. These days MP's waste so much time in protests that they don't spend enough time on quality debates.

  Like legislators at all levels : MP's decide the agenda(for nation) and ensure that the agenda is implemented by the executive.

Executive in Central Government:
  Prime minister and cabinet ministers form the executive. Cabinet ministers are the crème-de-la-crème  ministers of ruling party, they are inturn responsible for various departments like defence,finance,home ministry and so on.,

  Cabinet ministers headed by the Prime minister are accountable for all the Government work to  the Legislature, difficult job folks. Its easy for us to criticize them, but moving the big bureaucracy of our country is not a easy job, hats off to them.

Judiciary in Central Government:
Supreme court is the highest court of our country.
